I've finished the book. While I wasn't enthralled with it, the book itself wasn't bad. However, I didn't connect with either the hero or the heroine. Don't know why...just didn't. I don't think I'll pick up the next book of the series.
I probably won't do much reading tonight since the last episode of "John Adams" is on HBO tonight. I've read several chapters of the book by David McCollough that the movie is based on. I have to say, other than a few items that the director took liberties with, the movie has been rather good. I think the Paul Giamatti and Laura Linney have been great in their roles.
If I get some time...tonight's reading is: Devil May Cry by Sherrilyn Kenyon (A Dark Hunter Novel) - Fiction, paranormal romance, paperback.

Devil May Cry
Sin, an ancient Sumerian god, was one of the most powerful among his pantheon - until the night Artemis robbed him of his godhood and left him one step from death...
For millennia, the ex-god turned Dark-Hunter Sin has sought to regain his powers and take revenge on Artemis. But now he has bigger fish - or in this case, demons - to fry. The lethal gallu that were buried by his pantheon are stirring, and they are hungry for human flesh. Their goal: to destroy mankind. Sin is the only one who can stop them...if a certain woman doesn't kill him first.
Enemies have always made strange bedfellows, but never more so than when the fate of the world hangs in the balance. Now a man who only knows betrayal must trust the one person mostly likely to hand him to the demons. Artemis may have stolen his godhood, but his one has stolen his heart. The only question is: Will she keep it...or feed it to those who want him dead?

I didn't read anything yesterday other than my RWA magazine (Romance Writer's of America.) However, my best friend...John, the fed x driver (all right I don't really know that his name is John, but as many times as he's delivered books to my house, we should be on a first name basis)...delivered a package from Amazon.
So, here is tonight's reading:
So, here is tonight's reading:

Ok...I was wrong. I thought that I hadn't read any of the books in this series. But as I read "Midnight Rising," I realized that I had. Problem is...I can't remember which one. No matter...I still thought the book was good. Her explanation of what made Rio a vampire or "The Breed" was unique. I won't spoil it for any readers...let's just say is was a different theory. :-)
Tonight's Reading: "Magic Study" by Maria V. Snyder (fiction, fantasy/sci-fi, paperback) This is the 2nd book of the trilogy.

Magic StudyI've been meaning to read this book for a while. I absolutely loved Poison Study, the first book in this trilogy. However, I don't think I'll get through the whole book tonight since I'm beat and it has over 400 pages. But maybe a chapter or two before I fall asleep.... :-)
Yelena is a survivor. Kidnapped as a child, held prisoner as a teen, then released to act as a poison taster, she is now a student of magic. But these magic skills place her in imminent danger, and with an execution order on her head, she has no choice but to escape to Sitia, the land of her birth.
But nothing in Sitia is familiar. As she struggles to understand where she belongs and how to control her powers, a rogue magician emerges -- and Yelena catches his eye. Suddenly she is embroiled in a situation not of her making. And once again her magical abilities will either save her life...or be her downfall!

I have to start off by saying that I'm not a huge science fiction fan....fantasy/paranormal - yes...science fiction - no. That being said, I took a chance on Ann Aguirre's first book, "Grimspace." (See yesterday's post for a description.)
Well, after reading for 6 straight hours yesterday, I can say that not only did I finish the book...I actually enjoyed it. It had a lot of action that wasn't too confusing for us "non-scifi" people. The hero was strong and silent (mine kind of guy) and the heroine was a no-nonsense kick butt kinda gal. There was a bit of romance even though it's not classified as a romance. I even managed to enjoy the first person present tense narration (which I'm normally not a big fan of). I'm definitely looking forward to her next book in the series, "Wanderlust" that comes out in the Fall.
I'm going to start on "Midnight Rising" by Lara Adrian tonight. It's the fourth book in her Midinight Breed series. While, I haven't read the first three, if I like it, I'll just go back and read the others.

Tonight's reading:
"Midnight Rising" by Lara Adrian (fiction, paranormal romance, paperback)
"Fueled by pain and rage over a shattering betrayal, the warrior Rio has pledged his life to the war against the Rogues. He will let nothing stand in his way - least of all a mortal woman with the power to expose the entire vampire race. But now an ancient evil has been awakened, and a stunning darkness is on the rise.
For journalist, Dylan Alexander, it began with the discovery of a hidden tomb. Suddenly, she is at the center of a gathering storm of violence and secrets. But nothing is as dangerous as the scarred, lethally seductive man who rises from the shadows to plunge her into his world of dark desire and endless night. Here she is powerless to resist Rio's touch, even as she uncovers a shocking link to her own past. Now Dylan must choose: Leave Rio's midnight realm, or risk it all for the man who has shown her true passion and the infinite pleasures of the heart."
Excellent book! I know that it was sort of cheating since I had already read this book at least 5 times. But I read it again last night so I get to count it (besides...I make up the rules here. :-) )
I love the world that Nalini has created. Of all her characters I would have to say that Hawke (the Alpha of the SnowDancers) is my favorite. However, this book was about the Alpha of DarkRiver (a changeling clan) and his mate (a psy.) And I would have to say that Lucas (the Alpha) runs a close second to Hawke. I don't know...maybe it's the "take charge" attitude they both have as Alpha's.
Now on to my next week's reading...I picked up two more books last night in my weekly trip to my favorite store ~ Borders!
"Grimspace" by Ann Aguirre (fiction, science fiction, paperback.) I'm not a huge science fiction fan. But I read the synopsis on Nalini Singh's site and it sounded good. So, I'm giving it a shot.
Grand Theft Jesus: The Hijacking of Religion in America by Robert S. McElvaine (non-fiction, church history, hardback.) I read the first chapter last night and he talks a lot about the Christian Right and how their message is different from Jesus'.

"By all accounts, Sirantha Jax should have burned out years ago. As the carrier of a rare gene, Jax has the ability to jump ships through grimspace - a talent that cuts into her life expectancy, but makes her a highly prized navigator for the Corp. But then the ship she's navigating crash-lands, and she's accused of killing everyone on board. It's hard for Jax to defend herself: She has no memory of the crash.
Imprisoned and subjected to a ruthless interrogation, Jax is on the verge of madness. Then a mysterious man breaks into her cell, offering her freedom - for a price. March needs Jax to help his small band of rogue fighters break the Corp monopoly on interstellar travel - and establish a new breed of jumper.
Jax is only good at one thing - grimpspace - and it will eventually kill her. So, she may as well have some fun in the meantime..."
Grand Theft Jesus: The Hijacking of Religion in America by Robert S. McElvaine (non-fiction, church history, hardback.) I read the first chapter last night and he talks a lot about the Christian Right and how their message is different from Jesus'.
"'We're mad as Heaven, and we're not going to take it anymore!' declares historian Robert mcElvaine in this passionate and often hilarious rallying cry for sincere Jesus followers. He lets the rest of society know that the extreme right wing won't be allowed to speak for all Christians any longer. His whip-smart, take-no-prisoners polemic lays bare the Christian Right's "Easy Jesus" creed, in which people who claim to accept Jesus get a free pass to lie in his name. Grand Theft Jesus exposes the televangelists and the leaders of megachurches as the people Jesus warned us about - the wolves in sheep's clothing of our day."
I went to the bookstore last night and picked up a few new books to read. One of them had a great cover and sounded like it had a great storyline. I started in, anticipating a fun read. But found myself having difficulty with it.
So, what's the problem or better yet, what's MY problem?
It seems that a first person POV turns me off immediately. I don't know why, but I prefer third person. When I read first person POV novels, it pulls me back to my dreary high school days and all the <bad> stories that I wrote...All 1st person POV.
That being said, I'm going to try and struggle through my bias since I'm sure that the story will end up being as intriguing as it sounds.
I also started in on "A New Earth." It's Oprah's book of the club selection this month. I was intrigued by the author and the book after watching an episode. So, I crawled into bed last night and excitedly turned to the first page. After reading several pages, I realized that it was a little too "deep" for me to read at 11pm. So, I put it aside and started on the aforementioned book.
Today's reading list:
"Slave to Sensation" by Nalini Singh. (fiction, paranormal romance.) This series is one of my all time favorites and I've read each her books at least 5 times over. Her new book, "Hostage to Pleasure" won't be out until later this year. Boo...I hate waiting. I have a love/hate relationship with series. I always seem to be waiting for the next book.
So...while I haven't counted her books towards my 1,000 yet...they will definitely be included (sooner rather than later is seems.) :-)

Slave to Sensation
"In a world that denies emotions, where the ruling Psy punish any sign of desire, Sascha Duncan must conceal the feelings that brand her as flawed. To reveal them would be to sentence herself to the horror of "rehabilitation" - the complete psychic erasure of everything she ever was...
Both human and animal, Lucas Hunter is a changeling hungry for the very sensations the Psy disdain. After centuries of uneasy coexistence, these two races are now on the verge of war over the brutal murders of several changeling women. Lucas is determined to find the Psy killer who butchered his packmate, and Sascha is his ticket into their closely guarded society. But he soon discovers that this ice-cold Psy is very capable of passion - and that the animal in him is fascinated by her. Caught between their conflicting worlds, Lucas and Sascha must remain bound to their identities - or sacrifice everything for a taste of darkest temptation..."
The Ultimate Goal: Read 1,000 books.
Can I do it? If I counted all the books I've read since I started reading, I'd already be there. But, I'm not since that would be cheating. :-)
In order to read 1,000 books in ten years, I will have to average 8.5 books a month. That's not difficult to do with the romance novels I enjoy. However, my goal is to read a variety of genres.
Rules:
1) Have to read the entire book - start to finish
2) Post a blog reviewing the book
3) The rest I'll make up as I go...
First three books:
Start date: April 11, 2008
1) Witchling by Yasmine Galenorn (Fiction, Paranormal Romance, paperback)
2) Midnight Rising by Lara Adrian (Fiction, Paranormal Romance, paperback)
3) A New Earth: Awakening to Your Life's Purpose by Eckhart Tolle (Non-fiction, Spiritual/Inspirational, paperback)
